Burst Pipe Repair: What It Costs and How to Stop the Damage
10 May 2026 · Plumbers On Duty
A burst pipe can flood a home in minutes. Acting fast saves thousands in damage.
Step 1 — Shut off the water
Find the main stopcock (usually at the boundary or near the water meter) and turn it clockwise until water stops.
Step 2 — Cut the power
If water is near any electrical fittings, switch off the mains at the DB board.
Step 3 — Call a plumber
Typical repair costs
| Job | Cost |
|---|---|
| Call-out fee (Mon–Fri, business hours) | R450 – R850 |
| After-hours / emergency call-out | R900 – R1,800 |
| Burst copper pipe repair | R650 – R1,800 |
| Burst PVC / PEX repair | R450 – R1,200 |
| Section of pipe re-routing | R1,500 – R4,500 |
| Full re-pipe of a room | R6,000 – R15,000 |
What raises the bill
- Pipe buried in a slab or wall
- Old galvanised plumbing that flakes when handled
- Water damage to ceilings, drywall or flooring (usually a separate trade)
Insurance tip
Most home insurers cover sudden burst-pipe damage but NOT slow leaks. Document everything with photos and keep the plumber's invoice.
