Combi Boilers in South Africa: Is Instant Gas Hot Water Worth It?

Combi boilers (gas-fired, no tank, instant hot water and central heating in one unit) are common in the UK but new to SA. Brands like Bosch, Vaillant and Ariston now import locally. Are they worth it?

Running cost, 4-person household

SystemMonthly energyNotes
200 L electric geyserR680 to R1,100Off-peak timer helps
Heat pump + 200 L cylinderR220 to R380Best efficiency
Solar geyser + electric backupR150 to R450Weather-dependent
Gas combi (LPG)R780 to R1,200LPG at R32 to R38 per kg
Gas combi (piped natural gas, JHB only)R310 to R520Cheapest gas option

Install cost (2026)

  • Combi unit: R28,000 to R52,000
  • LPG installation with SAQCC gas certificate: R12,000 to R22,000
  • Flue and pipework: R6,000 to R11,000
  • Total: R46,000 to R85,000

A heat pump retrofit is R28,000 to R42,000 all-in, with lower running cost. Solar geyser is R32,000 to R55,000.

When a combi wins

  • No roof space for solar or heat pump
  • Piped natural gas available (Joburg CBD, parts of Sandton)
  • You want central heating radiators too
  • Multiple bathrooms used simultaneously (with a 32 kW+ unit)

When it loses

  • Rural or coastal (LPG delivery cost)
  • Load shedding (needs electricity for the fan and controls)
  • You already have a working solar/heat pump geyser

Compare heat pump vs solar or find a certified gas plumber.
