How Long Does a Geyser Element Last? (And Signs Yours Is Dying)
The element is the part that actually heats your water , a long metal coil that sits inside the geyser tank. When it goes, you get cold showers, sometimes a tripped DB board, and a R1,200-R2,500 callout.
Here is how long you should expect yours to last in South African conditions, and how to spot one on its way out.
Average lifespan of a geyser element in SA
| Water type / area | Typical element life |
|---|---|
| Soft water (most of Cape Town, parts of KZN coast) | 5-8 years |
| Average municipal water (Joburg, Pretoria, Durban) | 3-6 years |
| Hard water (Hartbeespoort, Vaal, parts of Limpopo, borehole users) | 1-3 years |
If you are on borehole water with no filtration, do not be surprised if you are replacing elements every 18-24 months. The full geyser itself usually lasts longer , see how long a geyser lasts in South Africa.
What kills geyser elements early
- Scale build-up , calcium and magnesium coat the element, it overheats, and burns out. This is the #1 killer in hard-water areas.
- Running dry , if the tank is drained (after a water cut or maintenance) and switched on without refilling, the element burns out in seconds.
- Voltage spikes , common during load shedding switch-overs. Surges can pit the element or weld the thermostat contacts.
- Wrong wattage , a 4 kW element jammed into a geyser wired for 3 kW will not last.
- Cheap aftermarket parts , a R180 element from a corner hardware will not give you the same life as a Kwikot, Heatech or Techron unit.
6 signs your element is on the way out
- Showers go lukewarm faster than they used to. The element is heating, but slowly , often a sign of heavy scale.
- You hear popping, crackling or sizzling from the geyser. That is water flashing on a scaled element.
- Geyser trips the breaker when it switches on. Often an earth leakage on the element. See our geyser tripping electricity guide.
- No hot water at all, but the breaker has not tripped. Element is open-circuit.
- Hot water has a metallic or rusty smell.
- Your electricity bill jumps for no reason , the element is working harder to push through scale.
What does a new element cost in 2026?
- Element (part only): R350-R900 depending on brand and kW.
- Replacement labour: R900-R1,800. More if the geyser needs to be drained and refilled.
- Often replaced together with the thermostat (R200-R450 extra) because they are right next to each other and labour is the same.
- Total realistic spend: R1,500-R3,000 at a registered plumber.
Always insist on a PIRB-registered plumber and a CoC if any other work is done at the same time. More on this in our plumber costs and hiring guide.
How to make your element last longer
- Run the thermostat at 60°C, not 70°C , less scale forms.
- Drain and flush the geyser once every 2-3 years (every year in hard-water areas).
- Fit a sacrificial anode if yours has worn out , this protects both the tank and the element.
- Install a surge protector on the DB board if you are in a load-shedding-heavy area.
- Never switch the geyser on after a water outage until you have opened a hot tap and confirmed full flow.
When to replace vs repair
If the geyser itself is under 8 years old, replace the element. If it is 10+ years old and already leaking, rusty or noisy, replace the whole unit , you will be back within a year otherwise. A new geyser plus install is R6,500-R12,000 , see how much a geyser costs in South Africa.
