A burst pipe can flood a room in minutes and cause thousands of rands in damage. The actions you take in the first five minutes matter more than anything else. Here is the calm, step-by-step plan every South African homeowner should know before an emergency strikes.

Step 1: Shut off the water immediately

Find and close your main water shutoff valve. This is usually near the water meter at the boundary of your property, or where the supply enters the house. Turning it clockwise stops all water to the home and is the single most effective action you can take.

If the burst is near the geyser, switch the geyser off at the distribution board too, and close the geyser's dedicated isolating valve if it has one.

Step 2: Cut the power if water is near electrics

If water is spreading near plug points, light fittings or the DB board, switch off the electricity at the main breaker. Water and electricity together are a serious shock and fire risk. Do not touch electrical fittings while standing in water.

Step 3: Limit the damage

  • Open taps to drain the remaining water in the system and relieve pressure.
  • Move furniture, electronics and valuables out of the affected area. Lift curtains and rugs.
  • Soak up standing water quickly. The faster you dry the area, the lower the risk of mould and lasting damage to ceilings and floors.

Step 4: Document everything for insurance

Photograph the burst, the water and all damaged items before you clean up. A burst pipe is generally an insured event under building insurance, and good evidence supports your claim. Keep any damaged materials where possible until the assessor has seen them.

Step 5: Call a PIRB-registered emergency plumber

Use a licensed, PIRB-registered plumber who can issue a Certificate of Compliance for any geyser-related work. After-hours and emergency call-outs cost more, often in the region of R800 to R1,500 or higher, but stopping the damage early saves far more than it costs.
