"Plumber Near Me": How to Vet a Local Plumber in 5 Minutes

Typing "plumber near me" is the easy part. Choosing the right one from the list is where most homeowners get burned. Here's a 5-minute routine that catches the worst chancers.

Minute 1: PIRB check

Open our PIRB verification tool and enter the plumber's name or registration number. If they're not registered, they cannot legally issue a Certificate of Compliance for geyser, sanitation or stormwater work — a deal-breaker for insurance claims.

Minute 2: Reviews across two platforms

Cross-check Google reviews against Hello Peter or our directory. A plumber with 50 reviews on Google and zero anywhere else is suspicious. Look specifically for how they handled negative reviews — a professional reply matters more than a perfect score.

Minute 3: The phone call test

Ask three quick questions:

  1. "What's your callout fee, and what does it include?"
  2. "Are you PIRB registered? Can you give me your number?"
  3. "Will you give me a written, itemised quote before starting?"

A pro will answer all three without hesitation. A chancer will dodge, deflect or get defensive.

Minute 4: Insurance and address

Ask for a public liability insurance certificate (R5m minimum) and a physical business address. Email the certificate to yourself — gives you recourse if something goes wrong.

Minute 5: Pricing sanity check

Compare against typical 2026 rates: R450–R750 callout, R500–R750/hour. Anyone quoting half of that is cutting corners somewhere; anyone quoting double should justify it (specialist equipment, after-hours, etc.).
